How long does a water heater last?

A standard tank water heater lasts 8–12 years. A tankless unit lasts 15–20 years. Oklahoma's hard water shortens tank life without maintenance, while annual flushes can push a well-built tank to the high end of that range. The anode rod is the single biggest factor in tank longevity. If you're approaching year 8–10 with a tank unit, start budgeting for replacement even if it seems fine.

What size water heater do I need for my family?

For most households, a 50-gallon gas tank water heater covers a family of four comfortably. Quick guide: 1–2 people, 30–40 gallons; 3–4 people, 40–50 gallons; 5+ people, 50+ gallons or consider tankless. First-hour rating (FHR) — how much hot water the heater can supply in the first hour — matters as much as tank size. If your family runs multiple showers, laundry, and dishwashers simultaneously, a higher FHR unit or tankless prevents the cold-water sandwich effect.

What are the signs my water heater is failing?

The clearest signs: rust-colored or discolored hot water (internal corrosion), visible rust on the tank exterior especially around fittings, water pooling around the base, inconsistent temperature despite correct thermostat settings, and unusual noises like popping or rumbling. Age alone is significant — if your tank is over 10 years old and showing any of the above, replacement is almost always smarter than repair.

How often should I flush my water heater in Oklahoma?

Once a year minimum — and in the Tulsa metro, it's even more important. Oklahoma's water is classified as moderately hard to hard, which means mineral sediment builds up faster inside your tank. That sediment layer sits at the bottom, forces your burner to work harder, increases energy bills, and shortens unit life. If your water heater is making a popping or rumbling noise, sediment is already a problem. Base ($19/month) and Core ($39/month) each include one annual flush. Premium ($65/month) includes two annual flushes. A standalone flush is $120.

Tank vs. tankless water heater: which is right for my Bixby home?

Tank water heaters cost less upfront ($1,950 published) and are simpler to maintain. Tankless water heaters heat water on demand, cutting energy use by 20–30% and lasting 15–20 years vs. 8–12 years for a tank. The tradeoff: higher upfront cost ($4,200 installed) and limited flow rate if multiple fixtures run simultaneously. For a family of four with normal usage patterns, either option works. If you have a large household running multiple showers at once, a tankless unit may be worth the investment.

What brands of water heaters do you install?

Common residential brands include Rheem, A.O. Smith, Bradford White, Navien, Rinnai, and Rheem tankless units. We typically recommend Rheem and A.O. Smith for standard tank units (strong warranty coverage, wide parts availability), and Navien or Rinnai for tankless systems (best efficiency ratings and reliability). We don't push a particular brand — we recommend based on your household's hot water demand, budget, and available space.

What do the membership plans include?

The repair visit is a $150 diagnostic fee, waived if you proceed with the repair. Base ($19/month) includes one annual flush and priority scheduling. Core ($39/month) includes one annual flush, priority scheduling, 15% off parts, and a waived service call fee. Premium ($65/month) includes two annual flushes, priority scheduling, 15% off parts, a waived service call fee, and free replacement labor. A standalone flush is $120.

Why is my water heater making noise?

The most common cause is sediment buildup at the bottom of the tank. As water heats, it bubbles up through that sediment layer, creating popping, rumbling, or crackling sounds. In the Tulsa metro this happens faster than average due to hard water. A thorough flush usually resolves it. Other causes include a failing anode rod (which can create a sulfur or rotten egg smell alongside the noise), thermal expansion (ticking sounds generally harmless), a faulty heating element in electric units, or a sediment-clogged drain valve.

How much does water heater installation cost in Bixby?

In the Bixby/Tulsa metro, water heater installation is published at $1,850 for a same-type tank swap, $1,950 for a 50-gallon gas install, and $4,200 for tankless. Each includes labor, permits, and haul-away of the old unit. Many plumbers quote a low number then add charges for old unit removal, permit fees, or code-compliance upgrades they 'discovered' after arrival. Our pricing is published and flat-rate: $1,950 for a standard 50-gallon tank install (includes removal of old unit, new installation, and code-compliant connections), and $4,200 for a full tankless conversion (includes gas line modifications, venting, and permit).
